Writing is both enriching and a challenge.
Writing offers a wide range of creative freedom. It is a challenge and often also a processing process. As a first step, choosing the exact topic and, of course, the corresponding concept is advisable. The latter also means setting boundaries to avoid distracting explanations. Utilise your potential from the ‘idea to the plan’. Concepts are always based on a brief. When writing, in many cases, you are your client. Here are a few tips from the ‘writing toolbox’:
Avoid distractions
Could you create a particular writing environment to minimise interruptions and maintain concentration and productivity?
Organising your work
The development and realisation of the idea is based on structure and clarity.
Edition
Expand or reduce? Authors ask themselves this question time and again. With the focus on clarity and impact, lengthy, rather boring explanations or specific passages should be deleted.
Uniqueness
The writing style reflects personality and point of view. The aim is to find a unique style that will stand out in the ‘literary landscape’.
Bringing the narrative to life
The topic defines the choice of expression. There is no enumeration of facts. Much more textually ‘picturesque’ descriptions. Profound, strong words. True to life and, depending on the chapter, still incorporate a certain humour in tragic stories. The art of writing is the ability to involve the reader in the story.
Feedback
Exchanging ideas with other authors or in a writing workshop can have a constructive effect on your perspective. However, it is essential not to get too distracted when realising your project and concept.
Inspiration
Engaging with art, music, and nature is inspiring and can activate creativity and passion for writing.
Which personality type?
It is essential to consider whether the narrative, story or report requires an active voice. At best, the readership can be reached more directly in the active form. Fictitious characters' names may fit the concept better depending on the topic.
Reading
Exploring different genres and styles activates your ideas and positively influences your writing technique.
Readership
Experienced and successful authors often adapt their writing style and content to the preferences and expectations of their readership. Beginners are more accessible and have to find their audience first.
Research
Correctness, fairness and netiquette increase credibility.
Write regularly
Routine promotes discipline and creativity.
Writer's block
When in good physical and mental condition, the brain works effectively for around ninety minutes. Then, it's time for a break. It is the right moment for a walk in the fresh air. Exercise can relieve writer's block, among other things. Nevertheless, breaks should be limited in time to avoid losing the ‘thread’. Sometimes, however, a more extended break is needed. At best, it takes a few days to get back into the flow.
Writing craft
Workshops and specialised literature can help to improve your writing technique.
Writing style
Please take the time to find the right writing style for the project.
Writing diary
Jot down ideas, observations and thoughts. Such notes are helpful when writing and encourage creativity.
Convincing characters
The protagonists' distinct motivations and weaknesses are part of the development arc of a narrative or story and possibly also in the writing of business projects.
Revision
An initial, roughly structured manuscript can facilitate the subsequent detailed revision.
Define goals
Could you create a concept? Scenarios. Roles, extras and extras. The corresponding chapters emerge during the writing process. If necessary, could you set an approximate word count?
Whoever writes stays. Writing should be a pleasure; a ‘must’ can have a demotivating effect and favour writer's block. Most people have known this since childhood. Before an essay at school. Journalists when summarising research. But bloggers and poets can also tell you a thing or two about it. Self-criticism is good, but the fear of failure is also a lousy companion when writing.
